Community Education

Education is an important part of what we do at WASAC. Sexual violence can be a difficult topic to discuss, but we can help. Our advocates can provide you with the tools to better understand the dynamics of sexual violence and a way to start your own conversations. Below are the programs we provide on a recurring basis to groups, as well as other topics we can facilitate upon request. Topics can be adjusted to suit the needs of the audience, while honoring intersectionality and diversity. Programs are available in English and Spanish.

Protective Parenting

Protective Parenting is an in-depth discussion about child sexual abuse issues that is appropriate for parents, caregivers, and community members and includes topics such as grooming, physical and behavioral signs, and how to support a child if they disclose that they have experienced sexual abuse. Participants will also learn about resources and suggestions for talking to children about body safety and consent. This program is court approved. To register for this class, click the link here.

Sexual Harassment

This educational program discusses sexual harassment in its many forms, including harassment experienced at school, in the workplace, and on the street. Participants will learn what common behaviors are included under this umbrella term and how to find support.

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

This educational program focuses on sexual harassment and its different forms within the workplace such as Quid Pro Quo, Hostile Work Environment, and Third Party. Participants will learn the difference between flirting and Harassment and how to find support.

Sexual Violence 101

This introductory educational program explores a broad range of topics related to sexual violence including the definitions of sexual assault, consent and statute definitions of current Kansas sex crimes. Program participants will gain insight, education, and knowledge about rape culture which will assist in refuting common sexual assault myths.

Supporting Disclosures

Disclosing sexual violence victimization can be a re-traumatizing experience for survivors. This educational program will explore how you can support a survivor by considering why an individual may be reluctant to disclose, what a disclosure may sound and/or look like, and ways you can support a survivor in a disclosure.

Dynamics of Child Sexual Abuse

This professional training presentation is geared toward professionals who work with children in any capacity. The curriculum instructs adults in the areas of child sexual abuse and personal body safety for youth. The program also includes: definitions of child sexual abuse, behavioral and physical indicators of sexual abuse, effects of sexual abuse, an activity on supporting disclosures of abuse, the neurobiology of trauma, community resources and much more. KDHE Approved for 2 hours of continuing education for center-based childcare staff.

Programming for Children & Teens

Our programs for children and teens offer discussion in a group environment around current social topics such as personal body safety, cyber bullying, sexting, sexual harassment, and healthy relationships. WASAC is on the approved speakers list for Wichita USD 259 and strives to collaborate with USD 259 and surrounding districts to keep youth safe.

Personal Safety Awareness Program

Personal Safety Awareness Program is for preschool and elementary aged children. These programs can includes activities and always encourages interaction. Topics include personal body safety, safe touch/unsafe touch, and identifying trusted adults. Programs can be between 20-45 minutes depending on the age of the group.

Bullying and Sexual Harassment

Bullying and Sexual Harassment (Middle and high school, approximately 45 minutes): Youth will learn about the different forms of bullying (physical, verbal, social, and cyber), discuss the myths around sexual harassment, and how to safety plan if they are targeted or being harassed. Youth will also learn the difference between flirting and sexual harassment and what the short and long term effects of harassment can be.

Healthy Relationships

Healthy Relationships (Middle and high school, approximately 45 minutes): In this presentation youth learn the different types of teen dating violence and some statistics around dating violence and sexual assault as it relates to youth in our community. Students will learn the red flags for relationship violence, discuss myths about dating violence and sexual assault. Youth are also engaged through the use of short videos and exercises to start a discussion about victim blaming and how to be an ally to someone in an unhealthy relationship.

Sexual Assault and Sexting

Sexual Assault and Sexting (Middle and high school, approximately 45 minutes): Youth learn the definition and types of sexual assault, discuss the myths around sexual assault, and learn how to safety plan if they or a friend is assaulted. The basic definition of consent will be discussed in order to learn healthy relationship skills. Youth will also learn the long term effects of sexual assault. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss how people can experience abuse through technology and will be asked to critically think about the effects of sexting.
